How to Use the Word Count Tool

Using this word count generator doesn't take any setup. Drop your text into the box on the left and the numbers on the right start moving right away - no button to press, nothing to load. Whether you need to count number of words in an essay or check a quick paragraph, the result shows up instantly.

  1. Paste or type your text into the input box. The word count starts updating the second you begin typing.
  2. Look at the orange box near the top of the sidebar - that's your live word count, the number most people come here for.
  3. Scroll through the rest of the stats. Characters, sentences, paragraphs, lines and reading time all update together, so you get the full picture without switching tools.
  4. Hit Copy Text once you're happy with the result, and your content is ready to paste wherever it's headed next

    What Counts as a Word?

A word, as far as this tool is concerned, is any block of characters with whitespace on either side - a space, a tab, or a line break. So "well-known" counts as a single word even with the hyphen in the middle, and a number like "2026" counts too, same as any regular word. Type five spaces between two words by accident? Doesn't matter. Extra spacing gets ignored, and only the words themselves are counted.

No limit at all. Since everything runs in your browser rather than on a server, you can paste in a full article, an entire essay, or even a book chapter and the count updates just as fast as it would for a single sentence.
